This is our second year buying coffee from the Quilla brothers located in the remote area of Pacaysuizo, Peru. This year's 4 bag lot comes from Abdon Quilla and his farm Chillimana Chucalpampa. It's a 2 hours walk from the closest road (and only access road) of Pacaysuizo. The position of both farms is unique since each is located on different sides of a mountain—the only way to get from one to the other is through a very precarious and artisanal bridge, made by the residents of the community. The main pillar of the two families is Juan’s wife, Bernardina. She does the weekly grocery shopping every Sunday in Massiapo, does the accounting for the families’ cafes, and the only one who owns a cell phone, from which she calls the Red Fox team from Massiapo to schedule pick-ups on the Pacaysuizo highway. Without her, Juan and Abdon’s coffee would not find the special market they have now. This coffee has to be carried by the whole family (Juan, Bernardina and Abdon) for almost 4 hours along very steep paths to reach the road. The simple route without any load takes 2 hours, but this extends to almost 4 hours if they also have to load bags of 46 kg of coffee each.
